They make chocolate and write romance – another TV appearance for Thomas Marcy

The so-called “western” leg of YourNovel.com was burning up the airwaves in not one but two TV appearances the day before Valentine’s talking about putting you in a romance novel and making fudge, caramel apples and chocolate treats perfect to top your gift giving to the one you love.

Watch and listen in as Thomas Marcy, author of Wild West Love Fest and more, appear on Daytime at WJHL, New Channel 11, Johnson City, TN in the Tri-Cities area:

The story of two local lovebirds is even sweeter when you consider the sometimes racy romance novels they have to their credit.

“It’s a very feel-good item,” Marcy Gallagher, co-owner of Kilwin’s Chocolates, Fudge, and Ice Cream in Downtown Asheville, said. “We wanted to bring love and joy to people.”

“When they taste a piece of fudge, they’ll do the happy dance,” she said simulating the dance. “They’ll go, ‘Oh my God, this is so good!'”

This time of year, confections are one sign of affection, but it’s not the only sign.

“Obviously, chocolate can be an aphrodisiac,” she said. “Cause it’s got ingredients that can, you know, get everything going.”

It only seems natural that Marcy’s inspired by her surroundings.

“So, sometimes in the oddest places, the ideas will come to us,” she said. “Oh, I’m gonna show you our covers.”

From “Heart of the Keys” to “The Treasure Seekers,” she writes steamy stories that can be personalized.

“It’s a romp,” she explained, comparing her writing style to Danielle Steele. “You star in your own personalized romance novel.”

It’s a Fabio-less idea, some might say.

Under the pen name Marcy Thomas, she has five books available on YourNovel.com. Customers answer questions online, and that information ends up in the final product.

“We’re up for anything,” Marcy said, who acknowledges it’s not always family-friendly.

“What kind of vixen are you going out with?” she laughs, sitting at home with her husband, Tom.

Reading an excerpt from “Wild West Love Fest,” husband Tom goes deep.

“I spotted this beautiful lady at the side of the road,” he read.

“Sexy voice!” Marcy said.

Tom’s central to an unexpected plot twist.

“And you’re beautiful friend here is the target of my desire,” he read.

The western fantasy wasn’t written by Marcy, it was actually Tom who took the reins at a difficult time.

“Just came out of left field when I was recovering,” he told News 13.

Last fall, Tom had brain surgery for a neurological condition. He was bedridden, but got busy on a book.

“Cause he told me, ‘I’m tired of watching daytime TV,'” Marcy recalled.

“She has always been the love of his life,” Tom read with that seductive voice. “From back in the days when love was new.”

Writing under the name Thomas Marcy, he cranked out “Wild West Love Fest” in four weeks–one more YourNovel.com title in the family.

“It’s not fabulous literature,” Tom said. “I don’t think anyone has to worry about a Pulitzer here, but it’s great fun.”

If you don’t take yourself too seriously, you might learn that writing isn’t necessarily brain surgery. Read between the lines, and you understand why fiction gave them something real to cling to.

“It’s just added a little spark to our lives,” he said.

With life, love and chocolate, the possibilities are endless.

“It would be so good to meld those ideas,” Marcy said.

So, if a romance revolving around chocolate emerges, you read about it here first.

Wilmington Star-News weighs in on YourNovel.com turning 25

Our thanks to Book Editor Ben Steelman, Wilmington Star-News, for the following on the paper’s blog Bookmarks:

OK, guys — and I know I’m mostly addressing you gentlemen out there — Valentine’s Day is now exactly one week away.

If you haven’t thought of a present or treat for your spouse/fiancée/Significant Other, you’d better do so quick. A pre-made bouquet from the grocery store? Marked–down Whitman’s Chocolates? A 99-cent card with kids’ fingerprints all over it? Doesn’t she (or he) deserve better than that?

How about her very own, personalized romance novel — with her as the heroine and you as the leading man?

That’s her purview of YourNovel.com, an online company run by the husband-and-wife team of Kathy Newbern and J.S. Fletcher, collaborating as “Fletcher Newbern.” The Raleigh-based couple have been doing this together since 1992, which means YourNovel is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

“We’re very grateful and very surprised,” Newbern said. “What could be better working together all day with the person you love?”

YourNovel offers 58 different story lines, ranging from straight, romances to historical fiction, mystery/detective yarns,  vampire tales or trysts set in exotic locales around the world. (Newbern and Fletcher, in another corner of their lives, are travel writers who’ve set foot on every continent on the globe.) There’s even a sports category for guys. Everything can be ordered at YourNovel.com.

Customers pick the plot line they like and the format (hardcover, paperback or e-book). They can provide a photo of themselves for the cover, if they like. Then, Newbern and Fletcher collect 25 details about the romantic couple, used to spice up and personalize the text. (Names, eye and hair color, favorite music group, nearest airport, etc. etc.)

“Mild” and “Wild” versions are available; Newbern says the “Wild” books are never graphic and use the normal eupheisms, but she doesn’t recommend them for readers younger than 18.

The YourNovel duo have been featured on NBC’s “Today Show,” People Magazine, USA Today and “The View.” The other day, they were even guests the other day on radios’ “John Boy and Billy” show.  Business has been so good, the couple have hired other writers to ghost new novels such as “Wild West Love Fest.”  (They’re in the market for more contributors and will email submission guidelines upon request.)

Customers run the gamut. Newbern says one gentleman orders a new romance every year for his wife — only the lovers are her and Sean Connery. Another, older gentleman ordered three different novels for three different women. (Newbern was careful to have the copies mailed to his address, to avoid embarrassing mix-ups.)

For your order, you get one, literally one-of-a-kind book. Prices begin at $49.95  for a paperback, $94.95 for a hardbound copy and $14.95 or less for selected e-books. Paperback are generally 170 pages long; hardcovers, 200-plus pages.

Sorry, the deadline just passed for Valentine’s orders this year. You can still order an e-book, or maybe you can plan this as a make-up gift. For more details, email [email protected].

Chocolate rules at Valentine’s; so does starring in a romance novel together

Here’s a shoutout to our novelists Tom and Mary, who got good press today in the Asheville Post where Tim W. Jackson writes:

In the past century, chocolate has become synonymous with Valentine’s Day. The industrial revolution meant that chocolate could be mass produced, which decreased the costs associated with chocolate. By the 1930s, chocolate’s appeal was far-reaching, being advertised to children and of course being touted as an exquisite gift choice.

Asheville Is for Chocolate-Lovers
Fortunately for chocolate-lovers in Asheville, plenty of options exist to feed the beast! One of those is Kilwins, whose owner knows a little something about romance. She’s the author of four personalized romance novels. In fact, it was her romance writing that ultimately led Marcy Gallagher and husband, Tom, to Asheville. While living in Florida about 10 years ago, she entered a romance writing contest for YourNovel.com. Her short story won and as a prize she received a stay at the Grove Park Inn. A few years later, Marcy (who writes under the name Marcy Thomas) and Tom decided to start a new life, so they opened a Kilwin’s franchise in Asheville and then another in Black Mountain…. (read the rest of the story here)

Meanwhile, you can order one of Marcy Thomas or Thomas Marcy’s novels right now for Valentine’s Day 2017.

Marcy Thomas reads from her personalized romance novel Heart of the Keys

Here are the titles the two have available that you can star in with your real-life hero or heroine:

  • Wild West Love Fest, the newest offering from YourNovel.com, where you and your sweetie go back in time 150 years to the Old West with a town full of characters right out of central casting.
  • Rome: Diamonds, Danger and Desire is a sexy European adventure, where the starring male takes on the role of a lifetime — secret agent — or does he? He and his special lady look the part, too, zipping along Rome’s crowded streets in a cool Ferrari and hanging out with mysterious types, including a sultan who plans to purchase the world’s most perfect diamond.
  • Treasure Seekers is set in tropical Ft. Lauderdale, where the starring couple embarks on a treasure hunt promising adventure and riches only to and learn about life’s most precious treasure.
  • Heart of the Keys set in Key West provides intrigue and romance thanks to an 1848 love letter that holds a secret known only to a wealthy businessman with ill intent; an unusual gentleman enlists the aid of the hero and heroine to help foil an unsavory scheme.
  • Shore Thing 2 (a collaboration with Fletcher Newbern) features four personalized short stories set at Huntington Beach, CA, known as Surf City USA; Lake Powell, UT; South Beach in Miami, FL; and on Great Exuma Island in the Bahamas.
  • Season’s Greetings, Season’s Love, set in the Town of Harmony, where the winter holidays are a time of enchantment and celebration.

YourNovel’com’s titles are available year-round priced from $11 to $125. Most popular are paperbacks starting at $39.95. With more than 50 titles available this “season of love,” YourNovel.com has made it easy for customers to narrow the choices via its categories pages, such as Beaches and Cruises. Ebooks can be delivered right through Feb. 14, and the company is year-round.

Asheville, NC, couple will sell you ice cream and put you in a romance novel

Tom and Marcy Gallagher appear on the cover of the new book they wrote for YourNovel.com, Wild West Love Fest with the pen name Thomas Marcy.

Tom and Marcy Gallagher appear on the cover of the new book they wrote for YourNovel.com, Wild West Love Fest with the pen name Thomas Marcy.

Visitors to Kilwin’s Chocolates, Fudge & Ice Cream in downtown Asheville often spot the colorful book covers framed on the wall. That’s when to their surprise, they discover that husband-wife shop owners Tom and Marcy Gallagher are writing romance novels when not working on a vat of double dark chocolate fudge.

“It’s a great reaction,” confides Marcy, “when I tell them, ‘Oh yes, we write novels, and you can actually star in our books.’ ” Under the pen names Marcy Thomas and Thomas Marcy, the pair has in fact produced half a dozen novels any couple can star in at YourNovel.com.

The publishing company, based in Raleigh, is the brainchild of another husband/wife team, J.S. Fletcher and Kathy Newbern, who write as Fletcher Newbern. Said Fletcher, “Our company’s actually celebrating its 25th year, and it’s been our absolute delight to work with the Gallaghers for 15 of those.” Newbern added, “Each year we release a new book, and this year’s is a rip-roaring hoot penned by Thomas Marcy. I promise, you’ll laugh out loud.”

Like all 50+ titles available at YourNovel.com, the new Wild West Love Fest can be personalized for any starring couple with more than 25 details using an easy, online form – including not only their names but eye and hair color, where they live and work, best friends, favorite music, sweet nicknames for each other, even their perfume and cologne. And, to make it fun, each book comes “wild” or “mild” in terms of romantic interludes.

In this latest novel, the starring couple rides horses into the Colorado mountains for a romantic picnic but are suddenly transported to the Wild West, circa 1870. They’re confronted by notorious pistol-packing outlaws, a love-sick gunslinger, a half-witted bounty hunter, a bevy of bodice-busting saloon girls, a less-than-ethical newspaper man, a quiet-but-wise Native American, a not-so-wise but good-hearted lawman and a cast of townsfolk straight out of central casting.

Said the Thomas, “You can’t believe how much fun it was to come up with this story line. It’s an idea Marcy and I had been bouncing around for a few years, but when we settled on it, the writing just started to flow.”

Said Newbern, “All the Kilwin’s fans in Asheville really have us to thank at least in a small way. Our relationship with the Gallaghers started when they lived in Florida, and Marcy won a trip to the Grove Park Inn in Asheville. We were running a romance writing contest for our 10th anniversary, and her story was selected for the resulting anthology Celebrating Romance. The trip was her prize, and Tom actually was the one who pointed the contest out to her.”

Marcy adds, “We fell in love with Asheville, and my sister had a successful Kilwin’s franchise in Florida, so we decided to take the plunge and here we are.”

Africa luxury safari offerings/star in the book

Ellie and her baby

Reported by J.S. Fletcher and
Kathy M. Newbern

Southern Africa is a long way from North America, so there is a time commitment involved getting there, but the trip is worth it, taking you to a world away from everything here and to a place where wild creatures still roam the earth.

Since the early days, people have gone on safari to Africa to see and, in some cases to hunt, big game animals. The “Big Five” (rhino, elephant, leopard, lion and Cape buffalo) were deemed the most dangerous to hunt, and thus they were the most prized. We went to see and shoot (with camera) not only the animals, but also to meet the people and view the incredible land that in many ways is frozen in time.

Our safari was hardly roughing it, because we went through Abercrombie & Kent (A&K), a luxury travel company that organizes trips throughout the world, including their line of luxury tent safaris in Africa. With A&K, it’s adventure by day, and luxury by night, something we appreciate. We stayed at Sanctuary Retreats, whose tents are more like penthouse suites.

There are always new experiences being offered for trips throughout Southern Africa.

Many of you have likely seen animals at theme parks, the zoo, or the circus, but until you see them in the open range or hear their screams, grunts, and growls outside your tent at night will you get the real feel of their power and presence.

You can star in African Safari: Wild Life, Wild Love

If you want to go to Africa, many companies offer tours, so calling your travel agent is a smart thing to do. A&K does an excellent job organizing adventures there, and you can get info about their trips at www.abercrombiekent.com or by calling 800-554-016.

If you can’t make it to Southern Africa to go on safari, you can take a great armchair adventure through YourNovel.com’s African Safari: Wild Life, Wild Love, a personalized adventure-romance novel set in Zambia. That’s right, it’s personalized: you and your love are the main characters in the book. We wrote it based on our luxury tent safari there, and you will really get a feel of what it’s like to go on safari by being in the book.
